Drone racing is quickly becoming popular and well on its way to becoming a legitimate sport. If you’re not familiar with drone racing, it’s racing drones using googles that allow the pilot to see the drones flight path. Now, DJI is equipping drone racers with some new gear that will give pilots a first-person point of view.
This new device is called the DJI Digital FPV system and includes goggles that resemble Ant-Man’s helmet, random comic book character reference there. It also includes an FPV Air Unit Module, FPV Camera that attaches to the drone, and an FPV Remote Controller. All of this will offer low-latency video transmission at 28 milliseconds and a maximum transmission range of 4km or about 2.5 miles. The goggles will have a 720p HD image quality at 120fps with a 150-degree field of view letting you see more than the human eye can see. The latency between the Air Unit and the Remote Control can go as low as 7ms letting pilots send commands to the drone faster.
The camera module can record up to 1080p at 60fps or 720p at 120fps. The video can be stored on an SD card for viewing later. The DJI Digital FPV System also allows you to pilot up to 8 drones simultaneously with a single FPV System. Users will be able to change feeds when flying to see the other drones in the air even if you’re not racing a drone.
All this will come in two different packages at two different prices. The “Experience Combo” will retail for US$819 while the “Fly More Combo” will retail for US$929.
